Meta's 24-Hour Rule: When Can You Message Customers on Instagram?

You can reply to a customer within 24 hours of their last message. Once that window closes, automated messages stop going out. Here is how the rule affects automation and comment DMs.

Published: June 10, 2026

In short

  • When a customer messages you on Instagram, a 24-hour messaging window opens and you can reply as many times as you like during it.
  • Every new message from the customer restarts the window. If they stay silent for 24 hours, nothing can be sent to them through the API.
  • Automation tools can't start a conversation on Instagram. The customer always sends the first message.
  • You can send only one private message in reply to a comment, and it has to go out within 7 days of the comment.
  • If the customer replies to that private message, the normal 24-hour window opens and the conversation continues.

When a customer messages you on Instagram, you have 24 hours to reply. You can send as many messages as you want in that time. If the customer doesn't write for 24 hours, automation tools can no longer message them.

Meta calls this period the "messaging window". It applies to every app that sends Instagram messages through Meta's API. If you use automated replies, or plan to, you need to know how the window works.

How the 24-hour window works

Meta's Instagram messaging documentation puts the rule in one sentence: an app has 24 hours to respond to a message from an Instagram user. In practice it works like this:

  1. The customer sends you a DM or replies to your story. The window opens.
  2. For the next 24 hours you can send them text, images, buttons and files. There is no limit on the number of messages.
  3. If the customer writes again, the 24 hours restart from their latest message.
  4. If the customer doesn't write for 24 hours, the window closes. Meta rejects any message sent after that.

The key point: what extends the window is the customer's message, not yours. Sending five messages in a row won't add a single minute.

The customer always starts the conversation

On Instagram, a business can't use the API to send the first message to someone who has never written to it. Meta says this clearly: a conversation starts when the user reaches out to you through your post, story or profile.

So be careful with any tool that promises "bulk DMs to your followers". The official API doesn't allow it. Tools that claim they can usually rely on other methods, and that puts your account at risk.

What happens when the window closes?

Once the window has closed, any message your automation sends won't reach the customer. Meta rejects the request. The customer doesn't notice anything. For you, it's a conversation left without an answer.

The only way to reopen a closed window is for the customer to write to you again. Typing a message yourself in the Instagram app isn't covered by this rule. It only applies to messages sent through the API.

How it affects automation

Message automation runs the moment the customer writes. When someone asks "when will my order arrive?", the answer goes out within seconds, right at the start of the window. In day-to-day use you won't run into the 24-hour rule.

Problems show up with delayed tasks:

  • Long waits inside a flow. If you build a flow that says "send a reminder two days later", the message won't go out unless the customer wrote in between.
  • Forgetting to follow up by hand. If you leave a question the automation couldn't answer until the next day, the window may already be closed.
  • Shipping updates. Sending "your order has shipped" by DM three days after the order falls outside the window.

Private replies to comments follow a different rule

Sending a DM to someone who commented on your post has its own rule. Meta calls this a "private reply".

Replying to a DM Private reply to a comment
What starts it? A message the customer sent you A comment the customer left on your post
Time limit 24 hours after the customer's last message 7 days after the comment
How many messages? Unlimited Only 1 per comment
After that The window renews each time the customer writes If the customer replies, a 24-hour window opens

So when someone comments "price?" on your post, you can send them one private message. If they reply to it, the conversation becomes a normal DM and the 24-hour rule kicks in. If they don't, you can't send a second message for the same comment.

Instagram Live comments have a shorter limit: a private reply can only be sent while the broadcast is live. Once it ends, the option is gone.

We explain how to set up comment automation on our Instagram comment automation page.

Three real situations

A boutique, a size question late at night. A customer writes at 11 pm: "do you have this dress in M?". The automation replies right away with size and stock details. If the customer writes "great, I'll take it" at 9 am, the window stays open for another 24 hours from that moment.

What the customer sees:

Instagram DM

11 pm

Do you have this dress in M?

Hi, the Black Satin Dress is in stock in M. It's 749 ₺.

9 am. The customer wrote again, so the window is open for 24 hours from now.

Great, I'll take it.

A shipping question, two days later. A customer orders on Tuesday and asks "when will it ship?". You say "Thursday". On Thursday you can't send an automated "your order has shipped" DM, because the customer hasn't written since Tuesday. It's more reliable to include the tracking details in Tuesday's reply, or to use another channel such as SMS or email.

Getting back the next day. A question comes in that the automation can't answer, and you say "we'll get back to you tomorrow". By tomorrow evening the window may be closed. Try to answer the same day. If you can't, asking the customer to "send us a message here tomorrow" will reopen the window.

Making good use of the window

  • Give the customer everything they need in the first reply: price, size, shipping time, payment options.
  • Make it easy to reply. A button or a clear question keeps the conversation going.
  • Don't rely on DMs for delayed reminders. Assume they won't be delivered if the customer hasn't written.
  • Check the messages the automation couldn't answer during the same day.

Frequently asked questions

After 24 hours, can I never message the customer again?

Not through an automation tool or any other app. As soon as the customer writes to you again, the window reopens and you can reply. Typing a message yourself in the Instagram app is not covered by this rule.

Does the window count from the customer's first message or their last one?

Their last one. Each time the customer writes, the 24 hours start again. Your own replies don't extend it.

Is sending a DM to someone who commented covered by the 24-hour rule?

No, comments have their own rule. You can send one private message per comment, within 7 days of the comment. If the customer replies to it, the normal 24-hour window starts.
